Your loom will give you a lifetime’s service provided that you show it a little love. Because of the repeated treadle and beating actions your loom’s frame may loosen with use. It’s easy to tighten it up.
Eeva and Liisa #
Your Toika Eeva or Liisa loom has mortice and tenon joints that are held together with wedges. These wedges need to be tight, otherwise the joints will loosen and the loom frame will “rock” as you weave. If they become too loose, the warp tension may be uneven and shafts may bind on the castle supports.
We recommend tightening the wedges at least monthly, or when you start a new warp.
Tightening the joints is easy. You need the mallet that came with your loom. Lost it? Any woodworker’s mallet will do, or you can order a replacement from us.
Now just give the widest end of each wedge a sharp tap with the mallet. Listen to the sound it makes, tapping a tight wedge makes a higher pitched sound. Tap once more if you aren’t sure. The joint has now been pulled tight.
Repeat for each wedge. There are eight on a Liisa, and six on an Eeva.
Janna, Anni, Laila, Leena and Siru #
These looms are fitted together with barrel nuts and bolts. They need tightening less frequently – only when you see that the frame is loose.
Use the Allen key to tighten the bolts. Lost it? It’s a metric size, and most assortments of Allen keys will have one that will fit. You can also order a replacement from us.
Do not over-tighten or the bolt will crush into the frame’s wood fibres.
