A colour tone is made by mixing a pure colour with a greyscale colour between white and black.
If a pure colour for example red is mixed with a dark grey or black it makes a darker version of the red, and is called a shade.
If the same pure colour is mixed with a light grey or white it makes a lighter version of the red, and is called a tint.
The colours (darker) and tints (lighter) created by mixing colours in this way are called tones.
