An extra warp thread on both the left and right side of the weaving that is threaded through the reed but not through a heddle. Because it is not part of the raised or lowered warp it appears to float in the middle of the shed.
A floating selvedge is used when weaving a twill or other pattern that does not naturally capture the selvedge with every pick back and forth and gives a neater edge to the cloth.
